Europe’s first Hyundai R800LC-7A is kept fully employed at Europe’s largest recycling operation of the Steenkorrel enterprise in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Operating in a 30-mile radius, the family-owned business is no stranger to large excavators. Many of these are employed in the demolition sector where another Steenkorrel division – Oudt Zwanenburg Demolition – is regularly called on to knock down seriously large buildings.
This demolition waste needs to be recycled. So too do the remains from other buildings demolished by other contractors in and around Amsterdam. The growing volumes of material mean that recycling volumes continue to increase and the company now boasts a 100-strong truck fleet. This does not just lead to a great deal of traffic on site but also a lot of rubble – around one million tonnes a year. All this is being put through one single crusher. This is no ordinary crusher but Europe’s largest stationary one. Made in Germany by Kleemann.
The sole purpose of the R800LC-7A is to load this stationary monster. Standing on top of this huge heap of demolition rubble, which resembles a quarry, it loads a brand new 45 tonnes capacity rigid hauler. Easily loading 5cu m at a time, it has the truck on its way with 45 to 50 tonnes of material in just 5-6 passes. Once full, it is just a short distance to the crusher hopper. During busy times, the recycling plant can handle almost 10,000 tonnes of the stuff a day.
Now operating the R800LC-7A, Lutfi (Mehmet) Turkmen is used to sit on the Cat 365. Replacing this machine for the Hyundai excavator is seen as the missing link in the chain for this mega recycling project to reach its production goals. Lufti declares to be very pleased with the Korean newcomer. “It offers fast cycle times and good digging performance,” he says.
